I purchased this machine from Costco in December of 2008. Within 8 months, the machine's electronics went bad: the up/down button wouldn't stop going up/down, and the machine wouldn't stop sewing! I took it to the only Singer repair person in my state, who charged me $40+tax to repair it. Within a month, the machine had the exact same problem again. The repair person exchanged it for a new model 4166. Within 3 weeks, the machine had the EXACT same problem as the original. I've called Singer, who REFUSES to replace this model for a different one of comparable value. The best that my repair person could do was to replace it with a comparable model for an additional $199. What a rip-off! Now I'm stuck with a non-functional machine that will cost me the price of a new machine to replace. Never purchase this model!

While this machine has a slew of functions, it is not built to last. Today I was told by a dealer than 30% of Singer machines are returned for repair so that people get frustrated and decide to upgrade which means they will spend even more money. I bought it, had problems with the bobbin not threading (very common) so it was returned. I am not buying another Singer product.
So far, so good.,

I bought this machine from Costco in 2009, and it still works as I expected it to. I'm not a professional sewer, but I do use this machine pretty regularly (several hours every weekend) for baby quilts, blankets, changing pads, and burp cloths for gifting and selling on Etsy. I like all the functions and I think it was a good bargain at the time. I have had to be cautious about which bobbins I use with it because the wrong type throws off the stitch timing and tension. I can't use the universal metal bobbins that I had stockpiled from my previous machine - must use the type that this machine came with. I also have to clean this machine out often after heavy use because all the minky and plush fuzz causes the machine to jam. When cleaned and oiled properly, I have not had any permanent problems with this machine. Haven't had to make any repairs or replacements yet. I would not recommend this machine for a lot of quilting because the space between the presser foot and the feed...Read more
