Amazon.com Review
This compact, portable sewing machine is great for apartments or small homes without space for a dedicated sewing area. It's also conducive to tailoring on the move, whether it's doing a last-minute alteration on a wedding dress at the church or patching a tent at a car camping site, as it can alternately run on four AA batteries instead of its included adaptor. Geared for beginning sewers, the machine comes already threaded and ready to use, plus includes step-by-step instructions on how to set it up and perform basic tasks. The Dressmaker has great stitch control and is able to sew through thicker materials, such as denim or canvas, or handle delicate fabrics, such as silks, without tearing them. An easy-to-use push-button control panel turns the power and light on or off and sets the speed of the needle. In addition, the bobbin drops in horizontally, making it easy for first-time sewers to insert. Durable metal gears are designed to keep your machine working for years to come. The Dressmaker comes with a handy foot pedal and a 100-piece sewing kit with everything necessary to begin. The kit includes ten 50-meter spool threads and 32 threaded bobbins of varying colors, 30 needles, 12 assorted buttons, 10 head pins, a thimble, a threader, a pair of scissors, a measuring tape, and a seam ripper packed in a plastic storage bag. Because of its size, this machine better serves sewers interested in performing basic mending tasks--repairing seams, hemming, and reattaching buttons--as its arm is rather small for large-scale projects. The Dressmaker sewing center is covered by a one-year warranty on parts. --Cristina Vaamonde

I tested this machine for a small needlework shop to see if it were worth keeping around for emergencies and odd jobs.
Although the description claims that this little machine takes the "intimidation" out of sewing, it's really a fussy little gadget that best serves experienced stitchers in emergency situations or while travelling. To expect that a neophyte would be able to know how to adjust tension and manipulate fabric is to invite verbal abuse from those who don't know what they're doing.
One of the main flaws of this machine is not necessarily its mechanics (it's far noisier than a regular machine), but its accessories; it's shipped with a pack of bobbins and spools pre-wound with the worst thread imaginable: cheap, fuzzy, short-fiber spun polyester. Not only will spun polyester thread cause expensive machines to choke, but in this machine, it's a recipe for the disasters of tangling thread, throat plate jams and damaged needles.

You get exactly what you pay for wifh this. The thread tension is a real problem. I couldn't stitch chiffon at all- it kept snagging and bunching up. The foot pedal is so poorly made, I was nervous pressing on it.
I'd rather sew by hand than fight with this .... Do yourself a favor- don't be cheap, buy a real machine.

Prior to the purchase of this machine I had only performed "hand-sewing." I am a crocheter/knitter and I generally add linings and other things to my pieces that require fabric. I had purchased a "handy-stitch" to help with my ventures - but it was very hard to control. I found the "dressmaker" on sale and picked it up about a week ago and I have been completely pleased. Everything was packaged neatly and despite other reviews to the contrary - the thread is actually not all that bad. Plus, you get every color under the sun. I mean, lets get real... you're paying about thirty bucks for a sewing machine and your complaining that it doesn't stitch like an $800 machine? Come on, people. You get what you pay for. But, in respect to the product at hand... I think, perhaps, you get a bit more than you pay for. It is a sleak machine - compact - easy to use - and this is the opinion of an amature sewer. I have not regreted my purchase for a second. I...Read more
