4.0 out of 5 stars Since I relied heavily on reviews for my purchase., October 15, 2007

I am happy to finally have a new machine after 13 years. The light weight of the machine and the handle to pick it up is a real plus, since I lug it up and down stairs whenever I use it. I don't think I will need all 35 stitches but they seem simple enough to change. I've used the stretch stitch which works well. My one big complaint is the instructions for the one step button hole. The instructions are incomplete, telling you how to start, but not telling you to release the button hole lever when you want to come back. It took me a very long time to figure that out and to get the settings right to feed the fabric I was using. The button hole lever which is pulled down from the underside of the machine does not come down or go up easily and it bends with the required pressure when it is used. Threading the machine is very easy and I like the bobbin window. I love the plastic cover which also has a pocket for the instruction manual.

I bought this machine a year ago for use in my budding home business. It has been a work horse machine for a year now, never giving me a bit of trouble. I appreciate all of the features and accessories that came with it! I haven't used all of the various feet, but the walking foot has been indispensable for sewing with a variety of materials from knits to leathers! I believe Brother machines are great value and quality machines. I also own a Brother serger.

I am an absolute beginner...meaning, I know what a sewing machine looks like, but I never actually touched one. I read all the reviews on all the different Brother sewing machines available. I even called Brother directly to ask them which sewing machine they would recommend for a beginner. This was their pick. I have to admit, at first I was ready to throw the thing threw the window. The instructions are not for a beginner...I agree with some of the other reviewers...alot of the instructions are very incomplete. I actually took my machine to a sewing machine shop and took an hour lesson on how to use it! They helped alot. I am no longer afraid of it. I think it will be a very useful machine once I master it. I have already taken 1 class and plan to take more. A very good buy for the money. Even the seamstress who gave me the lesson said she would absolutely recommend this machine!
